Sarasota is a city south of Tampa on Florida’s Gulf Coast that was once the winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus. Today, it hosts a number of cultural institutes, notably the Ringling Museum of Art, New College of Florida, Florida State University College of Medicine, State College of Florida, and Sarasota School of Architecture.
Sarasota is the home to many cultural attractions and events, including the Ringling Museum of Art, Sarasota Orchestra, Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Sarasota Ballet, Asolo Repertory Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, Sarasota Film Festival, Ringling International Arts Festival, Sarasota Chalk Festival, and in 2017 the home of the World Rowing Championships. Sarasota is also home to the Mote Marine Laboratory and the Sarasota Jungle Gardens.
It’s also the gateway to miles of beaches with fine sand and shallow waters, such as Lido Beach and Siesta Key Beach.
Many homes and buildings are designed in the Italian style, especially Venetian. And many of the historic homes have been preserved and/or restored.
